How Our Grooved Gaskets Work

When assembling high-purity gas and fluid delivery systems, standard VCR-style face seal fittings have a tendency to over-tighten and potentially cause leaks. Hy-Tech’s Grooved Gaskets prevent over-tightening while providing effective leak resistance. Incidentally, our Grooved Gaskets reduce the risk of work hardening, further reducing leaks while extending the longevity of the parts.

Contact Points

  • The outer, thicker part of the gasket contacts the area outside the bead to prevent movement; at this point the contact area and friction resistance increase resulting in a noticeable increase in torque. This results in increased metal contact, which resists rotary action transfer, galling and stresses that could cause leakage.
  • Sealing bead contacts the grooved section angle.

Material Flow

  • Gasket material flows forward, contacting the partition part of the gasket at the bottom of the groove.
  • The thick part of the gasket contacts the gland outside the bead, increasing friction and torque.

Versatile Applications

In many cases, our Grooved Gaskets can actually seal damaged beads. Can have up to fifty remakes when used for helium leak testing.

Grooved Gasket face seal fittings seal on an angle in the groove of the gasket providing a single line contact seal, which is superior to the seal obtained with a flat surface seal. All grooved gaskets are basically the same in that they all use this groove contact seal. Hy-Tech has several different variations of these gaskets, which were developed to address different customer requests at the time. Following is a list of gaskets and their differences:

Gasket Style

  • Standard Design – for general use:
    • .280 ID; .490 OD; 062 thick;
    • Part 4-SS
  • Minimum Dead Volume Design – for bore line seal designs:
    • .298 ID; .490 OD; .062 thick;
    • Part 4-001
  • No-Overtighten Design – helps to prevent damage from over tightening:
    • .280 ID; .490 OD; .080 thick;
    • Part 4-NO
  • Dual-Mate Design – similar to the No-Overtighten Design but has two sealing points:
    • .210 ID; 490 OD; .080 thick;
    • Part 4-DMR

Retained gaskets have an ETFE retainer. All gaskets are compatible and interchangeable with Face Seal-style fittings.

Case Study/Technical Notes

For ¼” and ½” Fittings

Fact: Standard VCR-style face seal fittings often have over-tightening issues with their gaskets.

Problem: Over-tightening may cause rotary-action transfer, damaging beads, and potentially leaking.
