What Are Ultra-High Purity (UHP) Gases?

UHP gases have exceptionally low levels of contaminants and impurities. UHP gases are produced, handled, and stored with stringent controls, preventing contamination from particles, moisture, hydrocarbons, and other substances.

Achieving Optimal Purity Levels

UHP gases achieve purity levels upwards of 99.99%. Reaching purity levels this high may require different methods of purification and processing, including:

  • Cryogenic distillation – Separates gases based on their boiling points, compressing and cooling the gas to cryogenic temperatures, which causes the gases to liquefy.
  • Adsorption – Molecules, atoms, or ions from the gas adhere to the surface of a solid or liquid. This purification method is primarily used to remove hydrocarbons.
  • Membrane separation – Utilizes a semi-permeable membrane to separate substances selectively. There are various types of membrane separation processes, including:
    • Microfiltration
    • Ultrafiltration
    • Nanofiltration
    • Reverse osmosis
    • Gas separation membranes
  • Getter purification – Utilizing getter materials like zirconium or titanium alloys, this method causes a chemical reaction that traps impurities.
