The main difference between flat gaskets and grooved gaskets is that flat gaskets are flat sheets of material used for sealing between surfaces while grooved gaskets have grooved surfaces to offer increased seal support and leak resistance, especially in high-temperature applications. Here are some other differences between flat gaskets and grooved gaskets.
Flat Gaskets
The main purpose of flat gaskets is to create a seal between two surfaces to prevent fluids from leaking. They rely on compression between flanges to create a seal. Flat gaskets are usually made of rubber, cork, fiber, and metal. They have a simple design, are cost-effective, and are easy to install. Flat gaskets are meant for low-pressure applications, such as household plumbing, automotive engines, and electrical enclosures.

Grooved Gaskets
Grooved gaskets have face seal fittings which are superior to the seal of a flat gasket. They create a labyrinth seal where the peaks of the grooves experience higher stress, essentially capping fluid flow. Grooved gaskets are very useful in most industries, including the chemical and petrochemical industries. At Hy-Tech Fittings, our grooved gaskets can be found in both conventional power plants and nuclear power plants. In nuclear power plants, they are used as a heat exchanger gasket, as a valve cap gasket, or as a manhole cover gasket on steam generators.
Grooved gaskets are designed for high-pressure and high-temperature applications. Grooved gaskets are more expensive than flat gaskets, but provide excellent sealing under extreme conditions, even when experiencing shocks or vibrations. Grooved gaskets are said to provide nine times more seal support compared to most flat gaskets. They have versatile applications and can seal damaged beads.
At Hy-Tech Fittings, our grooved gaskets have a built-in stop feature, which prevents the gasket from moving too far forward during the assembly process. This helps prevent over-tightening and stops potential system damage. In order to avoid damage to the flanges by the metal core, grooved gaskets are generally used with layers of PTFE, graphite, aluminum, or silver to give total protection to the flanges.
At Hy-Tech Fittings, we have several different variations of grooved gaskets. Please contact [email protected] or call 800-638-5961 for current price and availability.
